With the coronavirus pandemic dominating the news, it is easy to ignore other threats to our well-being. Sadly, I learned this lesson the hard way. While I focused my energy on protecting myself and my loved ones from Covid-19, my 85-year-old grandma was killed by a pride of lions.

Not a day goes by that I don’t ask myself, “How could this happen?” We were all so sure taking grandma on an African safari was the right thing to do. She was in the high-risk group for Covid-19, because she was really old, and an African safari would provide fresh air.

Tragedy struck on the second day of the trip when we came upon a pride of lions. My grandma loves cats and always wanted to see a real lion. She smiled and clapped for joy when she saw them. Unfortunately, the lions were not happy to see her. As she waved at them to say hello, they attacked and killed her. It should go without saying that her Covid-19 facemask offered zero protection against the lions.

A few days later, we learned Trump issued travel restrictions, so we decided to cut our vacation short and return home. We buried my grandmother next to my grandfather. Sadly, many of her friends and loved ones were unable to attend the funeral services because of the lockdowns.

It angers me when I tell people my 85-year-old grandmother recently died, and they assume it was because of Covid-19. They are shocked when I tell them she was killed by lions. Why is everyone shocked? Why is Covid-19 suddenly the only possible cause of death? I remind them that other things can kill people. People still die in car crashes. People still die of cancer. People are still murdered. And yes, people are still killed by lions.

We only wanted to keep my poor, sweet grandmother safe. But our efforts to prevent her death are what killed her. After the funeral, I spent two days in my room listening to Alanis Morissette’s Ironic on a loop. The lyrics have a whole new meaning now. My grandmother’s death is more ironic than rain on a wedding day, and more tragic as well.

It is events like this that confirm to me Josh Anderson is a true seer, and The Book of Zelph is true.
